Children At Play – Slow Down!

By Wynfield Communications Committee

Children are on Our Streets!

Every morning and afternoon kids are walking in our Wynfield streets at a variety of times based on the season, children’s ages, and classes. After school, children are visiting friends, playing with pets, and riding scooters and bicycles. Summers are even busier.

Think of how devastating it would be if a child were to be injured by a vehicle in our neighborhood. As a parent, we encourage our kids to play outdoors, play with other neighborhood kids, and be able to ride their bikes to a neighbor’s house. However, we all need to remain mindful of the speed limit, stop signs, keep an eye out for children, and slow down further if we see kids in or near the street.

We have heard multiple accounts from the perspective of furious mothers who, while out walking with their children, have had close encounters from speeding cars and often with a distracted driver who doesn’t have their eyes on the road.  We do not have sidewalks in our
neighborhood, so many neighbors are walking with children or walking/jogging for exercise on our streets every day.

Protecting the safety of everyone in our neighborhood, it is essential that we acknowledge and follow these listed requests:

  • Drive slower and stay under 25 mph!
  • Especially slow down and drive around neighbors and children walking on streets.
  • Be aware – If you hit a pedestrian:
    • At 20 mph – 5% will die
    • At 30 mph – 45% will die
    • At 40 mph – 85% will die
  • Follow the law and stay off your cell phone while driving.

We want to continue to attract families with children to our community, and we, as a community, need to provide a safe environment for our
families.

PLEASE SLOW DOWN!
